Overview

The Internal Drainage System Design – Abu Dhabi Industry Practice course provides a comprehensive technical framework for designing, coordinating, reviewing and verifying sanitary drainage systems within Abu Dhabi’s regulatory and construction environment.

Across eight modules, participants begin with the regulatory framework and authority responsibilities before progressing through Drainage Fixture Unit (DFU) calculations and pipe sizing, venting-system design, building sewer and external tie-in coordination, septic and holding-tank systems, advanced hydraulic analysis, BIM-based digital compliance, and finally inspection, snagging and failure analysis.

The course is principally grounded in the Uniform Plumbing Code of Abu Dhabi (UPC-AD) and the Abu Dhabi International Private Sewage Disposal Code (ADIPSDC). It also addresses the respective roles of DMT and TAQA Water Solutions, helping participants connect internal drainage design with external sewer availability, invert-level coordination, MePS workflows, construction verification and operational performance.

Who Should Enrol?

This course is designed for professionals involved in the design, coordination, construction, inspection or approval of internal drainage systems, including:
  • MEP engineers.
  • Senior plumbing and drainage engineers.
  • Plumbing field experts.
  • Plumbing systems design managers.
  • BIM specialists involved in plumbing and drainage coordination.
  • Design and supervision consultants.
  • Site and inspection engineers.

The course is particularly relevant to professionals responsible for producing coordinated drainage designs, hydraulic calculations, authority submissions and site-verification documentation for projects in Abu Dhabi.

Why This Course Matters

Internal drainage systems are fundamental to building sanitation and public-health protection. Their performance depends not only on selecting a pipe diameter, but on correctly coordinating fixture loads, slopes, velocities, venting, trap protection, cleanouts, invert levels and the final discharge route.

Both under-design and over-design can create operational problems. Undersized systems can result in surcharge and backflow, while oversized drainage pipes may operate at insufficient velocity, allowing solids to settle and increasing the risk of blockage. Poor venting can lead to trap-seal loss, gurgling and sewer-gas migration, while incorrect building-sewer levels can make gravity discharge to the public network physically impossible.

This course develops a complete lifecycle approach that connects regulatory interpretation, hydraulic design, authority coordination, digital modelling and site inspection so that compliant drawings translate into reliable installed systems.

Course Deliverables

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Interpret and apply UPC-AD and ADIPSDC requirements to internal drainage and private sewage disposal systems.
  • Define the boundaries between internal drainage, the building sewer, private disposal systems and external public infrastructure.
  • Calculate Drainage Fixture Units and determine appropriate branch, stack and building-drain sizes using applicable UPC-AD sizing methodologies.
  • Evaluate drainage slopes and hydraulic velocities to minimise surcharge, solids deposition and blockage risks.
  • Design venting systems that maintain pressure balance and protect fixture trap seals from siphonage and backpressure.
  • Coordinate building sewer connections with TAQA Water Solutions, including tie-in points, invert levels and gravity-discharge feasibility.
  • Design and evaluate septic tanks, holding tanks and private sewage disposal systems where public sewer infrastructure is unavailable.
  • Apply advanced hydraulic-analysis methods to assess partial-flow conditions, self-cleansing velocity and drainage-system optimisation.
  • Use BIM and digital-compliance workflows to coordinate drainage geometry, slopes, invert levels and multidisciplinary interfaces.
  • Conduct structured site inspections, prepare professional snagging reports, diagnose drainage failures and recommend corrective actions.

Why Professionals Choose This Course
  • Covers the complete internal drainage lifecycle from regulation to construction verification.
  • Applies UPC-AD and ADIPSDC requirements to practical Abu Dhabi projects.
  • Develops hands-on DFU accumulation and pipe-sizing knowledge.
  • Addresses both undersizing and hydraulic problems caused by unnecessary oversizing.
  • Provides dedicated coverage of drainage venting and trap-seal protection.
  • Connects internal drainage design with TAQA Water Solutions external tie-in requirements.
  • Covers septic and holding tanks where public sewer connection is unavailable.
  • Introduces advanced hydraulic analysis using flow, velocity, slope and partial-pipe behaviour.
  • Integrates BIM, MePS and digital-compliance coordination.
  • Extends design knowledge into inspection, snagging, root-cause analysis and failure prevention.

The course helps professionals understand internal drainage as an integrated hydraulic system, rather than a collection of independently sized pipes, enabling better coordination between regulation, calculations, construction and long-term performance.

Module 01 — Regulatory Framework and Code Interpretation Arrow

Establish the regulatory foundation governing internal drainage in Abu Dhabi. Examine UPC-AD and ADIPSDC applicability, DMT and TAQA Water Solutions responsibilities, internal-versus-external system boundaries, approval workflows and the circumstances in which public sewer connection or private sewage disposal requirements apply.

Translate plumbing fixtures into Drainage Fixture Unit loads and use accumulated DFUs to determine appropriate branch, stack and building-drain sizes. The module addresses under-design, over-design, pipe slopes, cleanouts and the relationship between code-compliant sizing and reliable hydraulic performance.

Design the pressure-balancing component of the sanitary drainage network. Participants examine trap-seal protection, individual and wet venting, relief vents, vent sizing, stack-pressure behaviour, vent termination and common deficiencies that lead to siphonage, backpressure, odour migration and authority comments.

Coordinate the transition from the internal drainage system to external sewer infrastructure. The module addresses building-sewer sizing, invert-level compatibility, gravity-discharge feasibility, backwater protection, lifting-station solutions and the parallel coordination required between DMT internal review and TAQA Water Solutions external connection approval.

Apply ADIPSDC requirements when no public sewer connection is available. Compare septic tanks, which provide primary treatment and discharge to an approved absorption system, with holding tanks used for temporary storage and pump-out, while addressing sizing, sludge allowance, retention time, setbacks, soil suitability, access and operational requirements.

Move beyond prescriptive sizing by evaluating how drainage systems actually perform under operating conditions. Apply flow validation, partial-flow analysis, Manning’s equation, self-cleansing velocity principles, stack-pressure analysis and risk mapping to identify oversized, poorly graded or hydraulically vulnerable sections and optimise the final system.

Integrate drainage engineering into a coordinated BIM environment by modelling pipe sizes, slopes and invert levels accurately, detecting multidisciplinary clashes and maintaining consistency between calculations, layouts and digital models. The module also addresses MePS and BINAA workflows and digital-quality checks before authority submission.

Bring design intent into construction reality through structured inspection and failure analysis. Participants examine reverse slopes, poor pipe bedding, missing vent connections, backflow, incorrect installation and other common defects, while learning how to document observations, assess impacts, identify root causes and specify corrective actions through professional snagging reports.
