Overview

The Fundamentals of Plumbing Standards in Construction – Abu Dhabi Unified Plumbing Code Compliance course provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and applying the principal requirements governing plumbing systems in Abu Dhabi.

Across sixteen modules, participants progress from the ADUPC regulatory framework, general plumbing requirements and fixture design to water heaters, water-distribution systems, storage tanks, booster systems, sanitary drainage, interceptors, storm drainage and venting. The course then advances into indirect waste systems, medical gas and vacuum systems, testing and inspection, firestop protection, non-potable water reuse and integrated pressure and booster-pump systems.

The course connects code requirements with practical design, installation, coordination and submission activities. It incorporates ADUPC, MePS, UPC, ASSE, ASTM, NFPA and other referenced standards where applicable, helping participants understand how calculations, system layouts, equipment selections, testing procedures and technical documentation contribute to compliant plumbing submissions and reliable building performance.

Who Should Enrol?

This course is designed for professionals involved in the design, coordination, installation or review of building plumbing systems, including:
  • Plumbing design engineers.
  • Mechanical and MEP engineers.
  • Design and supervision consultants.
  • Site and construction engineers.
  • MEP coordinators and BIM professionals.
  • Technical professionals involved in plumbing submissions and inspections.

The course is particularly relevant to professionals responsible for translating plumbing-code requirements into coordinated system layouts, sizing calculations, specifications, installation details and compliant authority submissions.

Why This Course Matters

Plumbing systems directly affect public health, water quality, sanitation, building reliability and long-term maintainability. A compliant design must coordinate water supply, pressure, drainage, venting, fixture requirements, backflow prevention and specialised systems while maintaining accessibility and integration with architectural, structural, fire and mechanical disciplines.

Errors in fixture-unit calculations, pipe sizing, drainage slopes, venting, access clearances, backflow protection or equipment placement can lead to inadequate pressure, drainage failures, odour problems, contamination risks, inspection comments and costly rework. The source material repeatedly demonstrates how apparently small coordination or documentation issues can result in rejected MePS submissions or site corrections.

This course develops a structured approach to plumbing compliance, enabling participants to connect code interpretation with calculations, system selection, multidisciplinary coordination, testing, inspection and documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

Course Deliverables

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret the scope, terminology and regulatory application of the Abu Dhabi Unified Plumbing Code and relevant referenced standards.
  • Apply general plumbing requirements governing system location, accessibility, installation and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Calculate and evaluate fixture units, flow rates and sanitary requirements for plumbing fixtures and fittings.
  • Design and review water-heating, solar hot-water, water-distribution, storage and booster-pump systems.
  • Calculate water-supply and drainage pipe sizes using applicable fixture-unit, pressure, velocity and slope criteria.
  • Apply backflow-prevention, trap, interceptor, venting and indirect-waste requirements to appropriate building applications.
  • Evaluate stormwater, non-potable water reuse, greywater and specialised plumbing-system requirements.
  • Coordinate medical gas, vacuum, firestop and other specialised systems with architectural, structural, fire and MEP requirements.
  • Conduct and review plumbing testing and inspection procedures for potable, non-potable, drainage and vacuum systems.
  • Prepare coordinated plumbing layouts, riser diagrams, schedules, calculations and supporting documentation for MePS and authority review.

Why Professionals Choose This Course
  • Covers the complete plumbing-system lifecycle from code interpretation to testing and inspection.
  • Focuses specifically on Abu Dhabi plumbing requirements and MePS compliance.
  • Develops practical knowledge of fixture-unit calculations and pipe sizing.
  • Covers water supply, pressure zoning, storage tanks and booster systems.
  • Provides detailed treatment of sanitary drainage, venting and stormwater systems.
  • Addresses traps, grease, oil and sand interception and contamination prevention.
  • Includes water heaters, solar systems, greywater reuse and non-potable networks.
  • Introduces specialised medical gas and vacuum-system requirements.
  • Covers firestop protection and plumbing penetrations through fire-rated assemblies.
  • Extends technical design into testing, inspection, documentation and integrated system coordination.

The course helps professionals understand plumbing systems as an interconnected building service rather than a collection of individual pipes and fixtures, strengthening their ability to develop designs that are safe, maintainable, coordinated and suitable for authority approval and site execution.

Module 01 — Traps and Interceptors - FOG, Sand, Oil Separation Systems Arrow

Explores grease, oil and sand interception systems used to protect drainage networks in food-service, commercial and industrial applications. The module addresses trap configurations, seal depths, interceptor sizing, venting, access and maintenance requirements, together with supporting MePS documentation.

Brings the course together by examining the integration of municipal water, solar systems, greywater, booster-pump zoning and automated controls within a coordinated plumbing strategy. The module also addresses redundancy, switchover logic and the preparation of clear riser diagrams and control-flow documentation for submissions.

Explores the design and implementation of greywater and non-potable systems for applications such as irrigation and toilet flushing. Participants examine treatment processes, pipe identification, cross-connection prevention, separation requirements and the schematics and testing protocols required for regulatory review.

Explains the requirements for protecting penetrations where plumbing services pass through fire-rated walls and slabs. The module covers approved firestop systems, materials, installation techniques, sealing methods, inspection considerations and supporting certification and documentation.

Covers testing and inspection procedures for major plumbing-system categories, including hydrostatic testing, air testing and chlorination. Participants examine inspection stages, microbial-clearance requirements, scheduling, test verification and the documentation necessary to demonstrate compliant system performance.

Introduces specialised medical gas and vacuum-system requirements for healthcare environments in accordance with referenced NFPA and ASSE requirements. Participants examine gas types, zoning, approved materials, alarms, labelling, installer qualifications and the testing and documentation required for authority approval.

Focuses on contamination prevention through indirect-waste arrangements and proper air gaps. The module addresses approved receptors, waste-routing, slopes, maintenance and system coordination in sensitive environments such as kitchens and healthcare facilities.

Examines the role of plumbing vents in maintaining drainage-system pressure and protecting fixture trap seals. Participants explore individual, common, wet, circuit and relief vent configurations, along with vent sizing, termination clearances and coordination with roof and structural layouts.

Introduces conventional gravity and siphonic stormwater systems, including roof drains, rainfall calculations, pipe sizing and emergency overflow provisions. Participants also examine stormwater discharge strategies, backflow protection and the hydrologic and roof-zone documentation required for submission.

Applies sanitary-drainage requirements to pipe materials, gradients, cleanout locations and fixture-unit sizing. Participants learn how trap seals, venting, riser diagrams and coordination with architecture and fire-rated assemblies contribute to reliable and compliant drainage systems.
